First, figure out the circumference.

The circumference of the circle on top is
C = 2 pi r.
C = 2 x 3.14 x 1
C = 6.28cm.

Now, you can tell that the area we are looking for would be a rectangle if we unrolled it, so we just want the area of that.
A = l x w
We have the width: 3.
We now have the length: 6.28.
So area = 18.84 inches²
