Both viruses and prokaryotes need essential macromolecules (e.g. proteins, nucleic acids) to propagate, but only prokaryotes are able to use these macromolecules themselves when they replicate/divide. Viruses are obligate intracellular parasites, meaning they require a host to replicate; they do not have the molecular machinery to independently multiply.
